Joost Jongerden (PhD) is interim Chair Rural Sociology and Associate Professor Do-It-Yourself Development. His work sits at the intersection of rural sociology, political science, and historical sociology. His research examines the transformation of the countryside in the context of violent conflict, nation-building, and identity politics, with a particular focus on the Kurdistan region. Across this work, he explores how the rural is not only a site where these processes unfold but also a space in which people actively imagine and pursue alternative futures.
